Fire-rated hollow metal doors

Steel doors and frames built and installed as one tested assembly, to hold back fire and smoke at the walls that protect your escape routes.

A fire-rated hollow metal door is a steel leaf and a pressed steel frame that have been tested together to keep fire, heat and smoke on one side of a wall for a set time, typically 60, 90 or 120 minutes. The rating belongs to the whole assembly: leaf, frame, intumescent seals, glazing and every item of hardware. Change one of them and the door is no longer the door that was tested.

That is why we treat every opening as an engineered unit. We start from your fire strategy and door schedule, match each opening to the rating its wall requires, and build the leaf, frame and hardware preparations as a set. Steel construction makes these doors the default choice for stair cores, corridors, plant rooms, electrical rooms and car parks, where a door must survive daily knocks and still close and latch when the alarm sounds.

Doors can be supplied with vision panels in fire-rated glass, approved louvres and finishes to suit the space. Before production, our engineers check that every combination you specify stays within the tested scope of the door.

Key benefits

  • Tested as an assembly

Leaf, frame, seals and hardware are specified together, so the installed door matches the construction that was tested.

  • Stops smoke as well as flame

Intumescent and smoke seals close the perimeter gaps where hot gases and cold smoke escape first.

  • Built for daily use

Steel skins and welded frames resist impact, trolleys and constant traffic far better than timber in back-of-house areas.

  • Engineered per opening

Every door is drawn to its opening, with hardware preparations and wall fixings detailed before production starts.

  • Closes and latches every time

Self-closing, positive-latching hardware is part of the design, because a fire door only protects anyone when it is shut.

Certifications and testing

Our steel fire doors are classified by UL to UL 10B (UL file R21691) for 3, 2, 1½ and ¾-hour locations, and certified by IFC Certification (Kiwa UK) to BS 476-22 under certificate IFCC 1888 for FD90 and FD240 doorsets. Each certificate covers the configurations listed in it, so ask us for the evidence that matches your exact door, size and hardware.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 60, 90 or 120 minute fire rating mean?

It is the time the door assembly held back fire in a standard furnace test. Under European testing (EN 1634-1) the rating is written with letters for integrity (E) and insulation (I), for example EI 60. The rating your building needs comes from its fire strategy and the wall the door sits in, not from the door alone.

Can a fire-rated steel door have glass?

Yes. Vision panels use fire-rated glass in fire-rated glazing beads, and the glass size and type must stay within what was tested with that door. Larger glazed areas usually need a specific tested design. Tell us the size you need and we will confirm what is possible within the rating.

Why can't we fit any lock or closer we like?

Hardware is part of the tested assembly. Hinges, locks, closers and panic bars must be approved for a fire door of at least the same rating. A non-rated lock can soften or release long before the steel leaf fails, leaving the door open to fire and smoke.

Do fire doors need maintenance?

Yes. Standards such as NFPA 80 call for fire doors to be inspected at least once a year. Check that the door closes and latches on its own, that seals are intact and not painted over, that gaps around the leaf are within limits, and that nobody has wedged it open or swapped hardware for non-rated parts.

How long does production take?

Lead time depends on quantity, rating, finish and hardware. Within Jordan, doors are typically delivered within 1 to 2 weeks; for export, lead time depends on quantity. Send us your door schedule and drawings and we will confirm a programme with your quotation.
